WebP Compression

Bypass Discord's strict 256kb upload limits for emojis and stickers by exporting your assets natively in the highly compressed WebP format.

The Complete Guide to Discord Image Dimensions & File Limits (2024)

As a Discord server admin, your community's visual branding is the first thing new members see. If your Server Icon is pixelated, your Server Banner has your logo awkwardly chopped off at the top, or your custom emojis are rejected for being "too large," it makes managing the community frustrating.

Generic photo editors allow you to crop images, but they don't enforce the strict pixel dimensions, aspect ratios, and file size limits that Discord's backend requires. Here are the exact specifications you need to know to create the perfect server.

Master Discord Asset Cheat Sheet

Ensure your branding assets match these exact sizes before uploading them to your Server Settings. Our tool handles all of this math for you automatically.

Beating Discord's Strict File Size Limits

The most frustrating part of managing a Discord server is seeing the dreaded "File cannot be larger than 256.0 kb" error when trying to upload a Custom Emoji or Role Icon.

Because emojis are so small (128x128 pixels), highly detailed images exported as standard PNGs will easily exceed the 256KB weight limit. To bypass this, you should use our tool's Export Settings to save the image as a WebP file. WebP is a next-generation image format natively supported by Discord that provides vastly superior compression. You can use the Quality Slider to compress the image until it safely fits under the limit, without losing visual fidelity.

The Server Banner Safe Zone

To unlock a Server Banner, your community needs to reach Server Boost Level 2. It sits at the very top of your channel list and requires a 960x540 (16:9) image.

The Safe Zone: Discord lays your Server's Name (e.g., "My Awesome Server") in white text directly over the top of the banner image. Furthermore, the top 48 pixels of the banner are darkened with a subtle shadow gradient to ensure that text is readable. Therefore, you should never place important logos or text in the top 20% of your banner image. Use our Live UI Preview to see exactly how your specific server name text will overlay your cropped image.

The Server Icon Mask Trap

Even though Discord requires you to upload a 1:1 Square image for your Server Icon (512x512), the app will apply a circular mask over it in the UI. If you have text or a logo near the corners of your image, it will be completely cut off in the chat log and server list.

Pro Tip:Select the "Server Icon" tab in our resizer. The cropping tool will automatically overlay a circular guide over your square canvas. Adjust the zoom slider on the left to ensure your logo sits perfectly inside the circle.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size is a Discord Custom Emoji?

Discord custom emojis must be exactly 128x128 pixels (a 1:1 square ratio) and under 256KB in file size. If your image is too large, use the WebP export option in our tool to compress the file size without losing quality.

What are the Discord Server Banner dimensions?

Discord Server Banners require a resolution of 960x540 pixels (a 16:9 aspect ratio). The top 48 pixels are covered by the server name text, so avoid putting important logos at the very top. This feature requires Server Boost Level 2.

Why is my Discord banner blurry?

If you upload an image that is not exactly a 16:9 aspect ratio or is significantly larger than 960x540, Discord's automated server compression will forcefully shrink it to fit, resulting in a blurry image. Use our tool to crop it to the exact pixel size before uploading to bypass Discord's aggressive compression.

Does this tool steal or save my images?

Absolutely not. This tool is built entirely on client-side HTML5 Javascript. When you upload an image, it is loaded into your web browser's local memory. The cropping and compression happen on your device's CPU. No files are ever sent to our servers.
